Selected questions
to Michael from the Matchpoint column, October 1997 issue of ace
Magazine, London
Who do you
see as the world No.1 players in five years time?
Maybe Hingis since she's only 16. For the men it's tough to say. Maybe
Kafelnikov, no, it's got to be someone who's 20 or younger. Possibly
Philippoussis.
What's your
proudest moment?
When I was 16 and I got baptised. It was in October of 1988 in my
grandparents' church in Thousand Oaks, California. I got baptised
by my pastor there. I got dunked pretty good.
Most embarrassing
moment?
When I was 16 I was playing in this exhibition match in North Carolina.
It was really tough and after the match I drank a lot of water to
stop getting cramps. I had to play a doubles match not too long after.
At 5-4 in the final set, we must have had ten deuces and I had to
go to the bathroom so bad. I had to stop in the middle of the game.
There was a crowd of about maybe three or four thousand people and
they were like, "What the heck is he doing in the middle of the game?"
The bad thing was that the bathroom was at the top of the stadium,
so I had to walk up the stairs and everybody knew exactly what I was
going to do. That was pretty embarrassing when I came back out and
everybody started clapping.
Favourite
song of all time?
"All I Ever Wanted" by Margaret Becker. [No relation to Boris.]
What's your
idea of perfect happiness?
Heaven. My picture of heaven is what it says in the Bible. A place
where you no longer have to deal with pain or suffering. A glorious
place.
What irritates
you most about your job?
Heavy luggage and the travelling. My brother helps me with the luggage
but it's still difficult having to deal with waiting for delayed planes.
If your house
was on fire and you could only save one object, what would it be?
I wouldn't look for objects. I'd be concentrating more on my family
because family is something I can't replace. All the other material
things in my life can be replaced.
What is the
most valuable thing you've learned in life?
I think I'm still learning a lot of things. Probably one of the most
valuable things and one I'm continuing to learn is how to love. I
think it's something you can go a whole lifetime and still not completely
understand. You're constantly learning.
If you could
have been one person in history, who would it have been?
Me. I'm not the most significant person in the world but I feel I'm
on this earth for a reason, and I could then be myself the way I want
to be.
What are you
most likely to complain about in a hotel?
If the room service is bad. Sometimes you have hotels where the room
service is not good and if you're in a new place, it's difficult to
find new places to eat.
