The Chang Gang,
otherwise known as Michael's famille.
Carl Chang, older brother/best friend/coach (also the dude
on the right in the photo)
Carl was born on February 13, 1969 in Hoboken NJ USA. He graduated
from San Dieguito High School in 1987, where he was on the tennis
team. Carl, like Michael, was a talented junior who had beaten the
likes of Pete Sampras, among other current pros. Carl attended the
University of California at Berkeley on a tennis scholarship and graduated
with a business degree in 1991. He entertained thoughts of going into
international investment or attending law school, but decided to give
a shot at the tennis first. But after briefly trying out the pro tour,
Carl decided that he didn't like it and probably would have bailed
had Michael not been looking for a new coach at the time. Carl agreed
to take over as Michael's coach, and the rest is history!!!! :) :)
Joe Chang, father
Joe was born in 1944 and came to the US in 1966. He received a master's
degree in chemistry from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken
NJ and went on to work for the Merck & 3M Corporation, and later Unocal
76. Joe was also, in Michael's words, "first and main coach." He has
since retired to devote more time to managing Michael's estate.
Betty Chang,
mother/home-cooking wiz
Betty (nee Tung) was born on March 6, 1944 in New Delhi, India. Her
father was the Taiwanese ambassador to India. Betty met Joe in the
States on a blind date in New York City. She received her bachelor's
degree at the University of Minnesota and was also a chemist. She
too has retired but occasionally ventures out to Asian and Grand Slam
tournaments to cheer Michael on. When she used to tour with Michael,
Betty cooked lots of awesome soup noodles and dumplings for her younger
son. In fact, during a tournament in London, it was reported that
she "took over an entire hotel kitchen" just so she could prepare
the best meal possible for Michael!
Diana Chang, sister-in-law (the gal to the right)
Diana (nee Ying) is two years Carl's junior and was born on February
11, 1971 in Taiwan, where the rest of her family resides. She attended
grade school in the States and met Carl at UC-Berkeley. They got married
on December 16, 1995. Diana is an accountant and helps out with Michael's
Friends, the official fan club.
Katharine
Chang, niece
Katharine, daughter of Carl and Diana, was born on June 4, 1999.
Jerome (Jerry)
Yu, cousin/Michael's Friends head honcho
Jerry is the Special Projects Coordinator for the Chang "team." His
duties include managing Michael's Friends. Jerry received his undergraduate
degree in East Asian Studies at UCLA.
James (Jimmy)
Yu, cousin/homepage guru
Jimmy is the webmaster for Michael's official homepage (and he's Jerry's
older brother).
Elena (sp?)
Chang, cousin
Elena is another one of Michael's cousins in the Queens NY area. She
is the pianist for the Chinese church in Flushing.
Evelyn Chang,
cousin
Chang Tse-Peng,
cousin/professional golf player
This 26-year-old guy is a professional golf player in Taiwan and is
coached by his father, who is also his caddie. I think he recently
finished 5th in the 1997 Thailand Open (the 1st place winner was the
ultra-cute and dreamy Tiger Woods :D). He also was the runner-up in
the 1997 Vietnam Open. Tse-peng was also the winner of the 1996 ROC
(Republic of China) PGA Championship & Lin Kou Open.
Chang Sze
Man, grand-uncle/former editor-in-chief, TENNIS (Chinese version)
Sze Man is Joe's father's younger brother (got that?). He has a Ph.D
in a sports related field (what that field actually is, we have yet
to find out).
James
Wan, cousin/junior tennis player
