Michael's
Endorsements
Not
to be materialistic here, but every high-profile athlete has secured
sponsorships, and Michael is no exception. (Hopefully, he is one of
the few who endorses what he believes in.) Here is a list of what
he has endorsed (in alphabetical order, last updated January 1999):
Alisa Yu from Singapore reported that one day, she turned on her TV
and surfed to the Malaysian Channel (T.V. 2). There was an ad of Michael
playing tennis at the time he won the '89 French Open. He also had
a spoken message: "Stay active. Be free from drugs." Does anyone else
have any info about this?? What organization is this for?
American
Express
Summer 2000:
U.S. Open print, billboard, and MetroCard ads
Discover
Card
June
1996: "It Pays To Discover" (TV/print)
The TV ad (shot June 12, 1997, in California) is pretty cute; Michael
is dressed in nice casual clothes and he talks about what he buys
with his Discover Card (groceries, golf balls, stuff at The Sharper
Image, Bass Pro Shop, Northwest Airlines tix, etc.).
Disney,
joint commercial association (?what does that mean?)
Eveready
1997:
Energizer Batteries (TV/Australia, Singapore). Lily Hendra reports
that "Michael was doing Energizer ad on TV. The story line : Energizer
was taped playing tennis and he was winning with some 6-0 6-1 6-1
6-1 6-0 6-0 6-1 6-0 points (or more or less). Then the opponent turns
up to be Michael and he looks so exhausted, lying on the court. Energizer
says to him "What's the matter Mr. Chang?" Then Michael says "Don't
you ever give up?" Energizer says "Nope". And that's it. Of course
it ends with the usual "Never say Die!!!!" kinda thing."
It sounds really cute, has anyone seen it elsewhere? (Ironically,
this commercial aired just shortly before Michael's loss to Moya :(
)
Nissan,
USA
1997: Car commercial (TV), print ads (Asia)
Panasonic,
Asia
1990-1991:
Karaoke machines (Taiwan, TV)
Really bizarre commercial. Jay Leno loved it so much, he played it
twice. Michael is wearing an awful sweater with powder blue and yellow
stripes, and he's trying to sing in Mandarin to demonstrate the functions
of the karaoke machines (how the machine will adjust to the tune you're
singing in).
1990-1991:
Handheld cameras, bilingual laptop computers, TV sets (Taiwan, TV)
Prince
Racquets
1996:
Prince Michael Chang LongBody
(TV/print)
Not much of a commercial, just slo-mos of Michael hitting with an
overly-dramatic narrator talking about why this racquet is so good.
Some of my journalist friends thought that the ad screamed innuendos,
but my wholesome self couldn't pick up on any. *_*
"Relay

Procter
& Gamble
[Rejoice Shampoo (Pert Plus)], Asia
1993:
"Tow pei [dandruff], no way"
(TV/print)
Reebok International (shoes/tennis clothes/sunglass
wear/watches)
1989: Post-French Open ad (with Arantxa Sanchez, TV/print).
This is the campaign that declared, "Some kids go to Paris to study
history, others go to make it."
1990:
Reebok Pump TV ad
(TV/print). No loud music, no droning narrators.
1991: "Rock 'N' Roll Tennis Players" Ad (TV) Finally, a little
transcript. I only saw this once, but it shows Michael in a locker
room talking about his shoes, and how one should wear them to combat
"those rock and roll tennis players" out there. (At the time, Agassi.)
Haily Ho reports: "Michael said,' When you're 5 foot 8, hundred &
forty pounds, you don't play a power game! ... And my secret weapon:
SPEED. ... So if you wanna beat those "Rock 'N Roll" tennis guys,
"Pump up & air out!!' (he threw away a NIKE shoe at the end!! :>)"
1995: Black & white TV commercial (Hong Kong)
1995-1996: The Great Wall Ad (broadcast globally except the
US, TV)
1997:
Watch Reebok signature watch line.
The press conference to promote this was held in Hong Kong, and reportedly
gives Michael an 8-figure million dollar deal (I'm guessing it's HK
$), making him the highest paid celeb--in terms of endorsements--on
the colony. Previously, the person to hold this distinction was the
actor/singer/wannabe Andy Lau Tak Wah with his Sovilet Titus watch.
But now I'm kinda confused. Did his contract with Stelux terminate???
Stelux
(SMASH)
signature watches/alarm clocks
1993-present:
total 13 designs of signature line watches
Tiger
Balm, Singapore/U.S.
1997:
Photo shoot
(Australia)
1997: TV Commercial (Asia)
1999: TV Commercial (USA). In January, I was watching Access
Hollywood (which runs at the 7:30-8 pm slot on NBC in the States), and
out of nowhere came this commercial. Michael is shown in black & white,
serving, while the rest of the ad is in color. They show him rubbing
Tiger Balm into his thigh and the narrator says something about how
he uses it for pain. At the end, Michael's head appears on the upper
right hand corner and he says, smiling, "It works for me!" (Sorry, I
couldn't get the whole transcript!)
ALSO.....from
the summer
of 1994-spring 1995: In a move that surely eclipsed Andre Agassi's
star power, Michael had his own TV show on TVB-Pearl & Jade
(Asia), Michael Chang's World of Tennis, which featured casual
conversations and taped broadcasts of matches throughout his career.
He
has also endorsed these companies in the past:
1990:
Cathay Pacific Airlines
1990-?:
DuPont At
the time, Michael was the first and only person ever signed by DuPont
to endorse every single one of their products.
1996-?:
Foot Locker
1990-1991:
Longines Watches
1989:
Mitsubishi TV
1989-?:
Nissin Noodles
Nuprin
August
1991: "Just Nupe It"
(with Jimmy Connors, TV). This commercial helped Nuprin's sales a
bundle. The company came up with the idea after the great match that
Michael and Jimmy played at the '91 French Open. It's a dialogue between
the two, with Jimmy trying to advise Michael, the latter replying,
"I know, Mr. Connors."
PowerBar
STAR TV,
Asia
1993-1996: Spokesperson Stim-O-Stam
(sports food/drink)
1991: Striker (isotonic drink) (Hong Kong)
1992-1993:
U2 (fashion label, NOT the group)
1989-?:
Yale Locks
