1998 Legg Mason Tennis Classic Report #4 (by Yuan-Kwan Chan)

Wed. July 22:

Michael practiced not once but twice today. He was on the court at about 11 a.m.-ish (when I arrived) and was wearing a very peculiar T-shirt. The shirt was white and had the message in black block letters, "JESUS LOVES YOU," with the "Jesus" at the bottom of a big purple heart, and the "Loves You" underneath it. A huge hand signaling "I love you" in sign language came out of the top of the heart, punctuated by a tiny cloud off to the left side. Definitely very weird, because the design looked hand-drawn.

Michael also practiced again at 5 p.m. This time, he was wearing a gray Reebok T-shirt. Carl stood off to the side, wearing the same black Reebok shirt with Michael's autograph on the back--the very shirt that Michael's racquet stringer wore the other day. I intended to ask Carl after the practice about whether that design was available through Michael's Friends. Unfortunately, a diversion occurred in the form of a WTF guy handing out free Head Racquet shirts…and they were only for the kids! Carl slipped away. I instead was relegated to getting an autograph from Michael. I did wish Michael good luck, though, to which he turned, looked straight at me, and said thanks.

But again, this was a "let's stalk Jan-Michael Gambill" day. I saw him and his younger brother Tory practice shirtless, and their dad/coach said hello to me. How embarrassing. J-M was also found playing mini-tennis against kids at the Cartoon Network area, wearing blue shades and playing first-round doubles with his brother (they lost). It was so bad that J-M recognized me and gave me a little smile--or was it a smirk?--every time he saw me with the camera. Urgh.
