Live Report: Cincinnati semifinals, Muster d. Chang
Date: Sun, 10 Aug 1997 09:17:14 -0700
Report by Jim Burton

Just wanted you to know that I watched Michael's match against Thomas Muster last night. It was the most incredible display of tennis I have ever seen. Unfortunately Michael lost. He was my pick to win the final here this year.

I have been volunteering at this tournament for 17 years in the Press Box. In that time there are a hanful of matches that stand out. This was the best of them all. Michael fought back after a tremendous first set by Muster. He came back in the second set to break Muster in the first game then in the third set they took it to a tiebreak.

Watching this match was like being at a heavyweight fight. Both players had tremendous pace on the ball. It was fascinating to watch the points develop. Michael did his best to move Muster around but I think it came down to Michael playing a bit too defensively. This would have been a record 5 consecutive times to the finals. Something that only Wilander and Edberg have even approached. They, like Michael, had four consecutive appearances. Though Edberg has appeared in 6 finals.

Again, it was one of the best matches I have ever seen at this tournament. Michael showed what a true champion he is. He never gave up, he didn't make excuses.

People today say that athletes aren't role models for kids anymore. This certainly is not the case with Michael. I would be proud if my son can be like Michael.
