Kroger-St. Jude Live Report #3, Feb. 18, 2000 (by
Amber Yates)
Oh man, what a weird day. I've pretty much lived
at the iMac booth in the food court all day here at the KSJ tourney
in Memphis due to a lack of afternoon matches. Things picked up around
2:30pm CST when Jan-Michael Gambill and Scott Humphries took on Justin
Gimelstob and and Bas Lareau in the quaterfinals doubles round. In
the middle of the 2nd set, the game was put on hold due to an immediate
evacuation ordered by the Memphis PD because of an intense storm that
sighted twisters in the Memphis area. Imagine having 3,000 people
scrambling to the lowest level, which is the players locker rooms
and halls, of the racquet club. Players and spectators all gathered
in the sweltering halls, awaiting the OK that the coast was clear
of even potential danger. Thank God nothing serious happened. Matches
continued soon afterwards, and Gambill and Humphries lost in a frustrating
3 sets.
As I arrived early this morning, I caught Michael
Chang's practice in the stadium. He did well, and seemed very confident.
Tonight, however, was a different story. The first set, Chang was
on fire. He was up 4-0, and he had back to back aces. But then something
snapped. The spark and vigor were gone, and Byron Black of Zimbabwa
broke Michael's serve to catch up to his 4 game lead, and finally
took the game, set, match. At the end of the first set, Michael called
for the trainer and was laid out on the floor. Things were not looking
well. Apparently his left leg gave out, and he no longer hussled for
those impossible shots. Carl no longer applauded and cheered, and
when asked was Michael ok, he only shook his head.
So, as I continue to sit here at the iMac booth in
the food court tonight, only an hour after Chang's loss, I sit and
mourn. I know I may be somewhat dramatic, but it was very disappointing,
and I hate it for Michael's sake. He deserves so much.
So, Michael's out, Jan-Michael's out, Paradorn Srichaphan's
out, Cecil Mamiit's out. Who do I go for now?
Well, there seems to be a line appearing behind me
here at my choice picked Lime Green iMac. Better jet. This is Amber
signing out. Peace in Christ!
