Legg
Mason Tennis Classic Live Report #2, July 1997
(by YK's Mom)
July l2 &
l3:
Wade-Hahn [YK's lil' bro] volunteered from 9:00 AM to l:00 PM at the
Volunteer Village both days. He was so excited because the person
in charge appointed him to be in charge of something. Daddy and I
were greeters at church.
July l5: 8:00
AM - l:00 PM
I joined WH at the Village and we were appointed as mother and son
team to sell programs. WH was appointed as my supervisor and I had
to take orders from him. I'll call the person in charge B from here
as I wouldn't dare print her name because she would break all rules
for us to have fun--and for herself too! B is the exact personality
as WH's piano teacher, Ms. Butler [who is very gregarious!].
She's a big fan of Michael's. She puts his poster inside her car so
that she can see his face every time she opens the car door. As I
already told you, MC came in from the front door when I was moving
the wooden stand in my uniform. But I did catch him in the nick of
time just as I got off duty as MC finished his practice at court 1.
July l7: 8:00
AM - l:00 PM
We were assigned to the same front entrance. Michael & Carl came in
around the same time (l0-l0:30 AM). I quickly slapped on my button
down shirt, grabbed my bag and went after them, only to find that
they disappeared around the corner. I dashed over to court l but they
weren't there. Disappointed, I dashed back to my post. Then I realized
they had went through the VIP lounge and out the other way. I figured
I would have to fight the crowd when I finished my round at l2:l5
PM, which is the time when M finished his practice. Unbelievably,
B rushed over to me a l/2 hr. early and hollered: "Michael's on Court
1. Hurry, you'll catch him. Gooooo." I dashed over there and had plenty
of time to grab a good spot. It didn't take long before he noticed
the A. Magazine and autographed it. Then I noticed several of our
teammates were there asking for autographs too, in uniforms! It turned
out that B had gone through the trouble of running around (in l00
degree heat) to gather all of us!
I met WH back
at the tent. B was jumping up and down in disbelief--she had spent
all the time rounding us up and missed M, thus came away empty-handed!
She said we should all go over to the field outside so that she can
give us a good spanky! Hee, hee.
July l8: 8:00
AM - l:00 PM
Although we still had the same volunteer hours, we spent the whole
day at the Legg Mason. I had gotten a ticket for daddy to watch M's
semi-final match. He met us straight from work and we watched the
entire match together. It was a very exciting game. This blond, Jesus
Christ look-alike guy behind us kept pumping for Scott Draper. He
seemed to shout out Scott's name at the most inappropriate times--like
just when M's about to serve and there was dead silence. He finally
moved across the other side of the stadium when we kept showing our
annoyance. All in all, the audience was well-mannered. They cheered
up S when he wasn't doing well, and did the same for M.
We got home really
late because there was a huge thunderstorm just before the match.
Thunder and lightning, and buckets of rain were coming down at us.
We had to rush under the bleachers. The gusting wind was hurling tables
and umbrellas around us. All the people were gathering dangerously
among the electrical outlets and wires. Fortunately, it all subsided
after a l/2 hr. Then it was time to squeegee the court for almost
l-l/2 hours! I couldn't help but wonder how you handle this heavy
equipment last year! The court was really dry while our seats were
soaking wet!
Thanks Mom! But
how do you know what Jesus really looked like?
Folks, squeegeeing is NOT fun. I repeat.
