Michael's News: February 1998It's official: Michael has moved from Henderson, Nevada to Seattle. Where exactly in Seattle is he living? All we know is that he has built or is definitely building on Mercer Island, which is in the burbs. The article in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer stated the "summer weather [will be] ideal for his training." Other reasons for Michael's move include a desire for a change of scenery and a chance to be closer to his favorite hobby, fishing. "There's lots of great fishing there, a good Asian community and plenty of courts for me and Carl to work out at," Michael said. This month, the Chang Gang celebrated a slew of birthdays. Carl turned 29 years old on the Friday the 13th, and his wife Diana celebrated her 27th birthday on Wednesday, the 11th! What did Carl do to celebrate his birthday? Nothing. Michael himself turned 26 on the 22nd. In his first tournament of the month, Michael reached the semifinals of the Sybase Open, losing to eventual champion Andre Agassi. During the the tourney, Michael had the opportunity to help out with charity events. As copied from the tournament's newsletter: "The National Junior Tennis League was also the benefactor of Michael Chang's charity when Michael played a tiebreaker versus past NJTL president Don Ambramson. Don had bid for this matchup at an auction. With Sampras and Jonathan Stark cheering him on, Don fired a 107 mph ace past Chang but came up a bit short, 7-6 . . . Chang's charity even extended to his fellow pros when, scheduled to hit with brother Carl at 6 p.m. Wednesday night, he generously let Andre Agassi and Brad Gilbert use the court for a brisk 15-minute workout. When you rack up the income of these guys, you come to value practice court time more than dollars . . ." Michael then competed in Memphis, Tennessee, where he reached the finals of the Kroger/St. Jude Indoors. After the final, Michael was presented with a birthday cake while the crowd sang "Happy Birthday." News articles
