Michael was a
semifinalist in San Jose at the Sybase Open. After his second round
match, Michael was reportedly "so distraught about his form in his
second-round match that he spent time shortly afterwards hitting balls
with his brother and coach, Carl." Other news according to the Sybase
Open Web site: Engaging local college tennis angle around the Chang-Mamiit
semi -- and believe it or not, it does not involve Stanford. Chang's
coach, brother Carl, played for UC Berkeley under Scott McCain, who
also happens to be Mamiit's coach. Mamiit's a former NCAA singles
champion, the first freshman to do so since John McEnroe in '78 (so
I guess there's no avoiding Stanford). . . Even though Michael's still
a mere 26, he might well buy Boris Becker's theory that tennis years
are the same as dog years. "It's my 12th year on the tour and I can't
believe how fast it's all gone," he said yesterday afternoon. For a detailed
