Michael's News: January 1997

Carl Chang was named the 1996 Coach of the Year by Tennis Magazine! As a result, he was profiled in the January '97 issue, yet Michael was on the cover. Go figure. :)

Michael successfully defended his championship at the Kooyong Classic in Australia, where he posted wins over Thomas Enqvist, Boris Becker, and Pete Sampras. He has now won this 8-man exhibition event for the past three years. Michael also finished his Australian Open run as a semifinalist, where he lost to unseeded Carlos Moya (who beat defending champion Boris Becker). Michael has a lot to be proud of, as this was the third consecutive year that he had reached the semis at the Open. During the tournament, he defeated some very tough opponents, including Richey Reneberg, Tim Henman, Andrei Medvedev, and Marcelo Rios.
