Michael competed
in the Kooyong Classic, an eight-man exhibition in Melbourne. He finished
with a 1-2 match record, beating Kafelnikov and losing to Philippoussis
and Agassi. Michael chose to compete there after losing in the second
round in Adelaide, where he spent his New Year's. His next tournament
was the Australian Open, where he lost in five tough sets to Mark
Philippoussis in the second round.
