As you can tell
by the wrinkle on Michael's nose, June was not the best of months.
Michael lost in the fourth round of the French Open to two-time French
Open champion Sergi Bruguera. This was Michael's second loss to Bruguera
this year.
Afterwards, he
compiled a 3-5 record on grass, with all three wins coming at the
Heineken Trophy in Rosmalen. Michael made a valiant effort in the
first round of Wimbledon, rallying from 1-5 down in the fifth set
against Australian Todd Woodbridge, but came up short, losing the
set 8-6, and the match.
On a brighter
note, Michael was honored on May 29th at the Marriott World Trade
Center in New York City by A. Magazine with one of their seven
first-ever "Bridge Builder" awards for his dedication and motivation
for Asian American youth (like us!). Of course, Michael was in France
at the time when these awards were presented to him and congressman
Robert Matsui, figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, Beatrice TLC CEO Loida
Lewis, Reverend Syngman Rhee, actor George Takei, and Dr. Bala Ambati.
This presentation
coincided with the premiere of The A. Magazine Guide to Asian American
Pride, an educational video that was originally taped by the New
York-based Alan Weiss Productions. The running time of the video is
only 35 minutes, and I'm not sure exactly what footage is in there.
But if it's in line with what I've seen from Michael's uncut interview
video, there are bits and pieces from his half-hour shoot in the 1996
Atlanta tournament that were used as footage.
