Michael's News: May 1997

After qualifying and declining to list it on his schedule, Michael decided at the last minute to compete in the Peugeot Team World Championships in Germany. Alex O'Brien became the other singles player on the team after Pete Sampras withdrew with an injury. Alex had extra duties in doubles with Jonathan Stark, and they along with Michael played for the U.S. in this round-robin exhibition tournament. They finished with a 1-2 record, beating Croatia but losing to Australia and the Czech Republic. Michael had a 2-1 singles record, ironically beating Australian Mark Woodforde and Czech Bohdan Ulihrach, but losing to Croatian Goran Ivanisevic in a tight three- setter.

Prior to the start of the tournament, Michael teamed up with Mark Philippoussis (the hot Greek-Italian-Aussie guy), and the Woodies (Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge), to head a SMASH Tennis clinic. 1,500 kids showed up at the event, which was held in front of the Dusseldorf Town Hall on May 17 and 18. An additional 15,000 people watched as Michael and 3/4 of the Australian Davis Cup team introduced the sport to the kids to show them how fun it is.

Earlier this month, Michael competed in the Italian Open, where he was handed his second consecutive loss in the opening round by unseeded Herman Gumy.

Michael was on a May cover of SMASH Tennis (a Japanese tennis magazine). The cover .gif is here for you to look at. :) However, don't buy the mag because there are no articles on MC in the issue.

Michael was also on the cover of the March/April ish of TENNIS MATCH, and I didn't know about this until my dad told me cuz going to school in a small town like Williamsburg, we don't get a wealth of periodical delights. But my dad was fortunate enough to snag the last copy in his nearby newsstand for me, God bless him. The article is pretty huge, though full of subjectivity.
