Michael's News: May 1998Because of a new injury to his left wrist, Michael sat out during the first round tie of the World Team Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany. However, Michael played for the U.S. in the next two rounds, teamming with fellow singles player Jim Courier and the doubles team of Todd Martin and Richey Reneberg. Unfortunately, the U.S. was eliminated with a 0-3 record, having lost those ties to Australia, the Czech Republic, and Sweden respectively. Michael lost both of his matches to Korda and Bjorkman, but his form in the Korda match looked *much* improved. A funny moment happened during Michael's singles match against Petr Korda when a fan shouted "I love you, Michael" before one point. Michael responded with an embarrassed shrug, prompting one of the Eurosport commentators to state, "He's got to be one of the Most Eligible Bachelors in the world right now." :o) Prior to Dusseldorf, Michael competed in the Licher German Open in Hamburg, where he lost in the second round to Francisco Clavet. Michael then competed in Rome at the Italian Open. After stunning #1 Pete Sampras in the third round in straight sets, Michael lost his quarterfinal match--partly due to an unspecified left wrist injury--to German Open champion Alberto Costa. While Michael was in Rome, he helped out--yet again!--with some charity efforts there. According to the ATP Tour: "Helping
to raise food for the poor: Solidarity messages from Rome Finally, Michael finished the month of May by competing at the French Open where he lost in the third round to Francisco Clavet. He was the only American to reach the third round. For French Open reports, go to the live reports section. There are also articles listed below as well as this bit o'news: "CHANG'S POLITESSE: Michael Chang never fails to amaze the personnel at Roland Garros. This year it's his manners. Following his loss to Spain's Franciso Clavet, Chang waited for the ball girls and boys to finish collecting the balls, and then thanked each one individually for working his match. "He's the only player who ever thanked us for every ball and every bottle of water," said Caroline, a head ball girl on center court." News & pictures
