Michael's News: May 1999

TOURNAMENT RESULTS: Michael completed his French Open 10th anniversary (of his win in '89) with a tough first-round loss to the top seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Earlier this month, Michael competed in Hamburg, where he lost in the first round to Sjeng Schalken, and the Italian Open, where he lost in the second round to Karol Kucera after beating Thomas Muster.

MICHAEL FEATURED IN TENNIS MATCH MAGAZINE: This news is kind of late, but there is an interview with Michael on the last page of the April 1999 issue. In it, he states that while his injuries have frustrated him over the past year and a half, he is now much better and still very confident of his goals to reach the #1 ranking and win another Grand Slam event. He also mentioned that he has changed some of his training habits and cut them down because he felt he had overtrained last year. His regimen includes working with an NBA (U.S. professional basketball) trainer and practicing with University of Washington tennis players. Those lucky college kiddos.
