Michael's News: November/December 1996

On Friday night, Nov 8th, Michael was a guest on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and stole the show away from Kelsey Grammer and Kim Delaney. If you can get a clip, check out his singing for a recent Asian commercial for Panasonic karaoke machines.

The next week, he traveled to bro Carl's alma mater, UC-Berkeley, to play in an exho against John McEnroe (Michael won in straight sets). Michael and his family has set up the Chang Family Tennis Scholarship Fund @ Berkeley to help out aspiring students. On a side note, the 300-person dinner buffet for this event was catered by Yank Sing Restaurant, which has two branches in San Francisco.

Michael finished 1996 with a 1-2 round robin match record at the ATP World Championships in Germany, which was supposed to have been followed by an appearance in the Compaq Grand Slam Cup, but he withdrew from the tournament due to tendinitis in both ankles. During the World Championships, Michael and fellow player Richard Krajicek were featured in the German TV show "Aktuelles Sportstudio" on ZDF. The show was produced from Hannover at the Balhsen Museum.

Michael spent Christmas in California and New Year's Eve in a Las Vegas restaurant watching fireworks outside the window, both occasions with his family.

Because Michael was successfully able to retain his #2 ranking at the ATP Championships, he and Pete Sampras will represent the U.S. as the top seed in the Peugeot World Team Cup in Dusseldorf, Germany, in May 1997.
