SHANGHAI
SURPRISE: Michael won his second tournament
of the year at the Heineken Open in Shanghai, defeating Goran Ivanisevic
in the final. "There was a bit of a chanting match going on, the Chinese
versus the Croatians, and that was fun to be a part of." Michael and
Carl competed in the doubles bracket, where they lost in the opening
round. A bonus for Shanghainese fans: Michael has agreed to play in
this tournament for the next three years! ONWARD TO EUROPE: Michael lost to Guillaume Raoux of France in Stuttgart, Germany, in the opening round of the Eurocard Open. Raoux beat Michael earlier this year at the Australian Open. News from the Oct. '98 issue of Tennis: Michael "has taken up singing Mandarin chants as a fun way to learn to speak the language. 'I think that Mandarin is such a beautiful language,' he says. 'I want to learn it so that I can speak with people when I go to Asia. I'm not the best singer, but I enjoy it.'" From the Aug./Sept. issue of Tennis Match: American tennis player Mary Joe Fernandez says that she deeply admires how Michael takes such a vocal stance on his Christian beliefs. She adds that being a strong witness is something that she would love to be, but the introverted Fernandez states that it's not her style and would rather witness through actions than words.
