Michael's News: October/November 1997

In a nightmarish repeat of the past two US-Sweden Davis Cup ties in Goteburg, Sweden swept the Cup in its first three matches. Michael lost a four-set battle to Jonas Bjorkman, and Sampras suffered a serious injury that will sideline him for a month. Not even team chef David Zappala's good food could scare away the "ghosts," as Captain Gully described, of Goteburg.

Look for Michael's 1998 calendar! There are action photos and childhood pictures. It costs $120 HK and as far as I know is sold in Hong Kong (I'm not sure about other parts of the world).

Michael completed the season ranked #3 in the world behind Sampras and Rafter, another testament to his incredible consistency during the year.

Michael's final tournament of the year was the ATP Championships in Hannover, Germany. World-renowned opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti conducted the draw, and Michael was the top seed in the White Group, with Pete Sampras the top seed in the Red Group. The preliminary round was a round-robin exhibition, and Michael won his first match against Bruguera, but lost the following two to Bjorkman and Kafelnikov. Earlier in the week, Michael, Jonas Bjorkman, and Sergi Bruguera made appearances at the ATP Tour SMASH Tennis in Halle 11 playing against kids on the mini-tennis courts.

Prior to Hannover, Michael had lost three matches in a row, all indoors. They occurred in Singapore (Stark), Stuttgart (Pioline), and Paris (Gustafsson).

Although he lost in the Heineken Open first round, Michael stuck around in Singapore for a little while. He arrived on Friday evening, the 3rd, and will make a few public appearances during his one-week stay in Singapore. On Sunday night at 11:30 PM, TCS featured him in their TV program "In Conversation". He also participated in the Street Tennis event with a few TCS celebrities that Sunday morning. The event was held on the street between Suntec City and Millenia Tower. On TCS Channel 5 (Wednesday), Michael was featured on "Showbuzz" (as he was last year--Singapore's version of the American show "Entertainment Tonight"), around 8 or 9 ish. TCS Premier 12 featured Michael again, after "Showbuzz" (around 11 PM) in what they dubbed a Michael Chang Feature Match. I know this all sounds confusing, but hopefully all you Singaporean fans became couch potatoes on Wednesday and surfed between Channels 5 and 12. :)
