The Australian and US Davis Cup teams arrived in Washington, DC, one week early, and they began practice on Monday, the 15th. Michael practiced on Stadium Court, as did Pete Sampras. The US team also included Todd Martin. Representing Australia were US Open champion Patrick Rafter, Mark Philippoussis, and the "Woodies" (Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge). The US beat Australia, 4-1 (match record), its one loss to the Woodies in doubles. Earlier in the month, Michael competed at the US Open in Flushing, Queens, NY, where he reached the semifinals, losing to eventual champion Patrick Rafter.
