Japanese version

Showbuzz episode, taped on Oct. 13, 1998, broadcast the following day

For those of you who do not know, Showbuzz is the Singaporean version of the US's Entertainment Tonight and is aired on Channel 5. The clip is accompanied by loud rock music and begins with some footage of Michael from the 1996 Heineken Open, where he wore his purple and black Reebok ensemble. A narrator gives an introduction, talking about how Michael is the "most eligible bachelor on the tennis circuit," and the scene switches to the best Japanese restaurant in Singapore, which is called Keyaki. Michael, wearing a white dress shirt and black pants, sat with the host and two lucky female fans who won a contest sponsored by Showbuzz. Everyone is sitting and sipping tea. (The entire clip alternates between the teahouse and old tennis footage.) The host asks the girls if they think Michael is "marriage material," and Michael is blushing the entire time. One of the girls said that a characteristic of marriage material is "a stable income." Hmmm. Michael talked about how he doesn't want to rush into marriage, and that right now Christianity is his first priority.

Michael was then asked about his fans and whether any of them had done some fanatical things. He said that he has had some fans travel the world to watch him play in tournaments (hey, we know who we are!!), but then the host pushed him to say something more "scandalous." He said that one time, a female fan had actually had a picture of Michael taken in front of his house, and she asked him to autograph it. (I think this is what he said, but it was kind of hard to tell from the audio clip)

The idea of Michael singing also came to the forefront, and Michael admitted that he had been considering recording an album for a long time (recall that contract signing with Sony Taiwan!), but that it's not something that he's thinking about right now. Like tennis, he said, singing takes a lot of practice, and he doesn't want to spread himself too thin by not devoting 100% to either while trying to pursue both. So he just hones his singing skills through karaoke.

Michael was also asked to sing, and he chose a line from a Mandopop (Mandarin pop) song. Something with a lot of "nee da shin"'s (Mandarin for "your heart") in it. I didn't recognize it so I can't say which artist sings it. His singing is much improved since his Panasonic days. :) It should be pointed out that earlier in the day at a press conference, Michael sang a song loosely translated as "Don't be afraid that I'm broken hearted," and explained to reporters that learning Mandopop is the only way for him to learn Mandarin.
